Brett Stephens in OpinionJournal on the lunatic invitation of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Columbia University, thanks to Jogo. A good piece, and also kindly provides a pdf of an excellent piece from Commentary in the 1950s by Lionel Trilling (once of Columbia), entitled "George Orwell and the Politics of Truth".

Hey Bob, I like your point of view but, after some thought, I'm afraid that I can't agree with it. It would appear to me that what occurred was far more positive than negative and that the wonders of the American First Amendment showed their powers at the event. And Lee Bollinger's scathing indictment was so powerful that Ahmadinejad has decided to declare, on Iranian state TV, that the Holocaust happened, that Israel has a right to exist, and that gays and lesbians will no longer be executed.

Bollinger, I think, did try to turn the event into a confrontation with the evil ideas represented by Ahmadinejad. And to some degree he even succeeded in rattling the cage. But that's all it amounted to, in the end. rattling the cage, without making a dent in that smooth and inane smirk. And now he is being criticized for not being "polite" and "respectful". And look who is doing the criticizing: Rashid Khalidi, Juan Cole, Ali Akbar Mahdi, Hamid Zangeneh, etc. Just so happen that they are all viciously anti-Israel. I would be forgiven for suspecting that Ahmadinejad's position on "The Zionist entity" has more to do with their outrage at Bollinger's lacerations than it has with academic decorum.
